What Does Hyaluronic Acid Do To Your Skin?

I have recently shared with you my favourite hyaluronic acid product on Instagram and I got a bunch of questions from you on the HA itself, so I have decided to write this blog post to share the amazing benefits of HA with you. The good news is that you probably already use it as it is found in many moisturizers on the market.

First of all, hyaluronic acid is a humectant which means that it allows for water to bind to itself and therefore helps to hold water in the skin. It is naturally produced by our bodies and present in various organs, with the highest concentration in the skin to support the skin hydration.

It Helps With Wound Healing

Hyaluronic acid helps in guiding skin cells to come in in the setting of a wound, so it is a crucial ingredient for would healing.

It Increases Skin Hydration

Applied topically, it can hold water onto the top layer of your skin and increase skin hydration. It is really good at holding onto water; in fact, one gram of HA is estimated to be able to hold up to six liters of water, which is a lot of water!

It Improves The Appearance Of Wrinkles And Fine Lines

Since HA attracts water so strongly, hydrates and plumps up the skin, the downstream effect of that is improvement in skin texture (it feels smoother) and the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

It Works Amazing On All Skin Types

The other very nice thing about HA (especially for people with oily/combo skin type like mine) is that it is not greasy or comedogenic and feels very light on the skin. HA is still abundant in the skin, so putting it on the skin will not cause any irritation or sensitivity. Therefore, as an ingredient in skincare products is very easy to tolerate for all skin types.

My Favourite Hyaluronic Acid Product

My favourite hyaluronic acid is definitely  Neutrogena Hydro Boost Gel Cream (I use the one for extra dry skin, which is fragrance-free – there is also another version of it with added fragrance). I apply it while my skin is still damp and use just a little bit of it (it is not my moisturizer – instead, it is more of a serum or moisturizer booster if that makes sense) to lock in the hydration of my skin underneath the moisturizer. It delivers enhanced hydration that can help plump up wrinkles and fine lines as well as improve the overall appearance of the skin’s texture.

Other wonderful HA products that I highly recommend:

Keep your skin hydrated and plum babes! 💦 xx
